5.3 Trends in public opinions

Monitoring public perceptions

Considering the forthcoming demonstration phase of CCS, it is important to assess and monitor the general public's awareness of CCS, their knowledge of specific CCS options, their evaluations of aspects and consequences of these options (e.g., the risks and benefits), and their overall evaluations of these options.

This will be assessed by repeated administration of questionnaires to representative samples of the general public. The aim of this longitudinal research is to detect misconceptions regarding CCS: shared beliefs about attributes of CCS options that are clearly incorrect. Another aim is to investigate the information need of the public.

Furthermore, we will assess the impact of specific events and media coverage regarding CCS on public opinion by relating data on media coverage to data of the repeated opinion surveys among the general public. To this end, we will keep a log of media coverage of CCS.

Address public misconceptions

The second objective is to develop communication strategies to deal with any misconceptions that may be held by a substantial part of the public. Information about these misconceptions is derived from the longitudinal research described above.

Predict informed public opinion about CCS

The third objective is to collect informed opinions of the general public through a so-called Information-Choice Questionnaire (ICQ). In the ICQ, people first receive validated expert information about various aspects of CCS and are then asked to evaluate these aspects. As such, ICQ results reflect potential future public opinion about CCS options after the Dutch are thoroughly informed about pro’s and con’s of CCS. Results will be compared to a previously administered ICQ in 2007 as well as to the previously mentioned media log, to assess if and how informed opinions have changed over time.
