2.4 Chain integration

Main objectives

The aim of this WP is to offer a platform to integrate the results of the complete CATO-2 activities, particularly related to the longer-term development and implementation of CCS in the Netherlands.

Three main elements are crucial for CCS implementation:

  • Economic and environmental information from CATO-2 and national and international projects must be easily accessible for potential CCS projects, which may comprise various point sources of CO2 and storage reservoirs.
  • Business cases must be developed for a number of real or realistic cases that are likely to form the first stage of large-scale CCS. These cases will be integrated, to study the need for additional (external) requirements to optimise the integration into a large-scale CCS system.
  • Integration of economical, strategic and political information and findings, to analyse the implications for the CCS chain and combine the results into an accessible and comprehensive Implementation Plan, including road maps identifying the main decision issues, timing and deployment strategies as well as constructing technical, organisational and political agenda's to identify milestones and underline independencies for each of these trails. This WP will serve as a platform for the integration of results of all the SPs.

This task will address the economic assessment of CCS projects comprising the entire CCS chain. Analysis will be done by updating and applying an economic decision support system, such as the web-based tool that was developed in the EU Geocapacity project. Moreover, in this task a common framework for the reporting of pilot plant results to SP2 (WP 2.2) will be developed

An Implementation Plan that will be made will address the long-term goals for CCS in the Netherlands and identifies milestones in between. The Implementation Plan will support the government to judge the need, form and type of additional required pilot and test facilities and large-scale CCS demonstration projects.
