1.1 Post-Combustion CaptureBackground
Post-combustion capture can be of great importance for the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. However, the current state-of-the-art can not be applied at a larger scale without having serious drawbacks such as an increased cost of electricity, a drop in energy conversion efficiency up to 30% and a cost per ton captured CO2 that is significantly higher than what is expected under the European CO2 emission trading scheme. Finally, there are major questions regarding the scale up of a post combustion capture plant. Main objectivesWithin this Work Package definitions of user requirements and constraints for a large scale demo plant, such as the coal fired power plant of E.On Port of Rotterdam area, will be made. This will be followed by a preliminary design and an economical assessment of the plant. Several tasks are also devoted to developing new and better solvents, absorbers and strippers, and improve process integration.
In the fundamental part of this Work Package phase change solvents will be examined, as well as possible benefits of combined CO2 and SO2 removal. Another more fundamental topic is the development of a hybrid CO2 capture system with solvents and membranes. Workpackage managersMembersLatest Publications
