Wintershall Q08

The Wintershall Noordzee BV operated Q08-A Field, a Main Buntsandstein (Triassic) reservoir, is located 6 km off the Dutch coast some 15 km north of the harbour of IJmuiden. The field has been closed-in since 2004. Q08-A is currently waiting for the decision to abandon the facilities, which includes the on-shore Q08-Terminal and the neighbouring Q08-B platform. A third well drilled from Q08-A platform to an adjacent field, Castricum Zee (also a Main Buntsandstein reservoir), is also closed-in after it ceased production

In cooperation with the Rotterdam Climate Initiative (RCI) a feasibility study was performed by TNO in 2008 to investigate CO2 containment in the reservoir, the size for CO2 storage and the re-use of the facilities: 12 km pipeline from the Q08-Terminal to the platform, the platform itself and the three wells for injection and/or monitoring operations.

The feasibility study has been completed and the Q8-A Field is suitable for CO2 storage.

The size of 10 Megaton would last for the duration of 10 years of CO2 storage.
