Shell Barendrecht

Shell CO2 Storage B.V. (SCS) is in the process of starting up a demonstration for subsurface sequestration of pure CO2 coming from the Shell refinery in Pernis, the Netherlands.

The CO2 will be transported by pipeline to the depleted gas fields of Barendrecht en Barendrecht-Ziedewij, where it will be sequestered. A large study on all possible risks was carried out together with TNO and a dedicated monitoring plan was set up. SCS builds on the wide operational knowledge within Shell which includes decades of experience with safe Underground Gas Storage. They aim for the storage 10 million tons of CO2 over a period

of 25 years.
