E.ON Maasvlakte

The CATO-2 catcher pilot unit is located at the E.ON Maasvlakte coal-fired power station

in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Tests are run here to absorb CO2 from flue gas by means

of absorption liquids that chemically bind CO2. The CO2 is recovered from the liquid

by heating it.

The pilot plant captures about 250 kg of CO2 per hour, comparable to 0.4 MWe from a full scale coal fired power plant. Conventional amine solvents as well as the new concept of phase contactors can be tested. A necessary step in the development of full scale post combustion capture.

Coal will remain an important energy source in the world‘s future energy mix. E.ON focuses on post combustion capture because it seems the most valid option for today's new plants.

Post combustion CO2 capture is applicable to conventional coal fired plants, but at this stage only for new units. Later in time this technology may also be applicable for existing sites.
