In the Western Region the Rotterdam Climate Initiative (RCI) has set ambitious goals for CCS. RCI is initiated by Port of Rotterdam, the Rotterdam municipality, Deltalinqs, and DCMR Environmental Protection Agency as a work platform for government, organizations, companies and citizens. The goals include a 50% reduction in CO2 emission necessary for business activity, by 2025. This goal translates to a desired level CCS of 20 Mton per year by 2025. Actions will be focused on capture and on transport and storage, to be realized through business plans and cooperation agreements with industries. According to RCI additional and external research is essential to support the development of business cases. CATO-2 is considered to be a research programme that can be very valuable for implementing the CCS initiatives in the Rijnmond region.
