The CATO-2 ProjectGlobal climate is changing because of human activity. Fossil fuels will however continue to play a dominant role in the world energy supply until well into this century. Until now the combined effects of improving energy efficiency and increasing the use of renewable energy (and perhaps nuclear power) cannot achieve the required reductions in CO2 emissions. Therefore, CO2 capture and storage is one of the necessary options in eliminating the CO2 threat to the global climate.
The Dutch government has decided to start two large scale CCS demonstration projects in 2015. CATO-2 is the Dutch national CCS programme. It includes a consortium of nearly 40 partners working together to help realise the governments plans. CATO-2 has an extensive budget and is expected to be running from 2009 until 2014. This budget is provided by the Dutch government and CATO consortium partners.
